  • Civic Center Kapa'au (map)

Annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration - Kohala is the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1795, and a celebration is held in his honor every year on June 11. The day begins with a sunrise oli (chant), followed by hula, the procession of Royal Societies, lei draping on the statue of Kamehameha the Great, traditional pa’u parade with horses and riders honoring each of the nine Hawaiian Islands, and finishing with a community gathering of food and craft vendors.
